Overwhelmed parents
One of my specializations is supporting young families.
Raising young children brings a lot of change (chaos?) with it. Many parents struggle with parenting questions, work-life balance, and exhaustion.
Young children need their parents and caregivers to help regulate their emotions. When you are overstimulated or overwhelmed yourself, you are less able to provide that regulation. Your children then show more challenging behavior.
Everyone knows those mornings where everything goes wrong: you're late, you've slept poorly, and you have a headache. You need to be out the door in 5 minutes to get the kids to school on time and make it to an important meeting at work. Your oldest child is angry because they want to wear clothes that are in the wash and throws their bowl of yogurt off the breakfast table. Your youngest gets hit by a big glob of yogurt and starts crying loudly. Everything is covered in yogurt.
Feeling the stress yet?
With mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, you focus your attention with kindness on the present: what is your child telling you (through their behavior)? We look at what your child's behavior triggers in you. Looking at your own needs and those of your child with kindness and patience helps to reduce stress and create more peace at home.
